Registration is now open for the upcoming Handsprings Conference on Nov. 11 and 12, 2016 at the Bosque Conference and Retreat Center: 6400 Coors Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120.  Faculty will include the following publishing professionals:


  • Tracey Adams, Agent, Adams Literary
  • Molly Idle, a Caldecott Honor picture book illustrator
  • Wendy McClure, Senior Editor, Albert Whitman and Company, and author
  • Victoria Rock, Editor-At-Large and founding publisher, Children's Division Chronicle Books


The conference will include an evening social event on Friday and a full conference schedule on Saturday, including keynotes and the opportunity to attend three targeted, breakout sessions. Lunch at the Bosque Center is included in the tuition price for all participants.

Written manuscript and portfolio critiques will be available at an additional cost. Registration opens on-line at on August 31, 2016 and closes November 9, 2016There will be no refunds.


To select break-out sessions, simply click on one box in each of the Break-outs for #1, #2, and #3.  Please make sure you've done this before completing your registration. 


Book Sales

On Saturday, we will have a bookstore available to sell professional books and books by conference speakers and other attendees who are members of SCBWI. If you would like the bookstore to carry your book, register by October 5 to allow time for ordering. Books must be in print and available. SCBWI-NM does not guarantee that your books will be on hand, but the handouts will include a list of published authors attending the conference. Please email your titles (no more than three) to Michele Hathaway ( by October 5.



A limited number of rooms are available at the Bosque Retreat Center for Friday and or Saturday night. The rooms are modest, but comfortable and recently remodeled. They incluce a single bed, in-room sink, and centrally-located showers and baths. Other amenities include broadband, WiFi, Internet service, pergola, great room, labyrinth, grounds, library, chapel, and kitchenette. Cost: $45.00.



Early bird for members: $125 (must be received by 09/30)

Standard registration for members: $140 (must be received by 11/9)

Standard registration for non-members: $190 (must be received by 11/9)

At the door registration: CASH ONLY: $200

Optional Critiques: ($50 for members / $75 for non-members) REGISTER SOON! ONLY 25 AVAILABLE with up to 10 open to illustrators. Payment and submission must be received by September 30.


Manuscripts: email the first ten pages (double spaced) to Caroline Rose ( Use standard manuscript formatting. On the first page include the genre, age range, and expected word count of the final manuscript. 

Illustrator Portfolios: Critiques will be conducted digitally in advance of the conference. Participants are responsible for providing their own digital portfolio files (scans, photos, or original digital art): 

    • 8-10 portfolio examples in one of these formats: .jpg .png .pdf
    • File Requirements: 72 dpi, 1000×1000 pixels (14" x14")
    • Maximum file size, each individual image: 1MB (max of 10MB for 10 images)
    • Once your registration & payment have been received, you'll get an email with a link to upload your portfolio files.
    • Payment and artwork must be received by 9/30—make sure you leave enough time to upload your files!

All critiques will be returned to participants at the end of the conference.
